As a Brooklynite I'm proud to say that Beacon's Closet is a Brooklyn based female founded company. For those of you who are unaware Beacon's Closet is a buy/sell/trade consignment shop with locations in Brooklyn and Manhattan. This shop is a favorite to lots of New Yorkers and tourists. Their Greenpoint location even made it on TV in an episode of Broad City!
Tiffany is the manager at the Park Slope location. I met Tiffany about two years ago through a mutual friend of ours- Dassy.
Mushkie: Can you tell us where you from?
Tiffany: Sure! I'm from Indiana originally and came to NY because my friends from college were living here and I kinda just followed them. I originally moved to Boston and Beacon's Closet was hiring. My friend called me-She was managing the store at that time and she said, "Do you want to move to NY and work at Beacons Closet?”, and I said. “Yes, I'll be there next week.”
Mushkie: That was my next question! What brought you to NY?
Tiffany: Ye! My best friend moved to NY in 2002/2003. She started working at Beacons as the store manager. She knew I wanted to move to NY. She knew I was interested in working here. As soon as they had a position, she called me and asked do you want to work here and I said Yes.
Mushkie: So you weren't looking for a job in fashion?
Tiffany: Not at that time, no, I was living in Boston and was working In a children's store which was fun but it wasn't something I really wanted to do and I had started applying to some other clothing stores like Sacks and Bloomingdale's etc. in Boston but I didn't really have the right experience for places like that so this was perfect timing.
Mushkie: Any tips for someone who wants to get a job in the fashion industry?
Tiffany: if you want to work in fashion there are a lot of things. It depends on who you know. You should know, it is a lot of just making connections. And, of course your skill sets, but that's not always going to be enough. There are a lot of really skilled people in NY, a lot of people who have great experience, but if you know the right people, then you’re always going to be able to go in the direction that you want to go in. So make the connections. Volunteer, you know sometimes you have to do unpaid work but if you do that you can definitely pick it up.
Mushkie: What's your favorite aspect of working at Beacons?
Tiffany: There are a lot of things, of course the clothes! It's a lot of fun to see what people are bringing in. We get a lot of great stuff. Also, the people, everyone who works here is really fun. We have a great staff. I've built really good relationships over the years. So many people in Park Slope shop here for years and years. It is really a good feeling to me. Like, wow, they still love us. They're still coming here, and they're still finding great stuff. Also, seeing the new people too that come in and are like I love this store! So ye! (Laughing)
Mushkie: This is a little bit off topic but what good deed have you done today to make the world a better place?
Tiffany: Ooooh, let me think I biked to work I saved some carbon! Does that count? It's still too early in the day. I'm sure I'll do a good deed later today!
